Got myself a 1.6td caravelle coach today and I want to put an oil cooler in it. I know there are kit's availeble but they are a bit too expensive for my tastes. Has anyone made a system themselvs? I was thinkin radiator and termostat from the scrapyard and hoses from a local hose shop. Not too shure about the sandwich plate but i think there is a store here that has them. Anything else i need?

I'll also need some kind of instructions to know how to put it all together.

google "mocal" they have a very good range, i have seen a very neat instelation using a golf GTI cooler located in the air intake behind the back windows, i recon that you will need a sandwitch (take of plate ) and some hoses.

I did it myself buying bits separately.

As Neil says - search for Mocal to find your sandwhich plate. I got one that changes the flow with temperature increase which may be handy for your climate.

Save yourself messing around for days and get the pipe to go all the way to the front of the bus and back (about 10m). Its the best place to cool a radiator.

If anyone else are interested i have found out that an oil cooler and sandwich plate with thermostat from a golf mk 1 gti can be used Now i just need to source one.

I've used MK1 Golf take off before, they are great unless you either need a rubber seal for the top or a new thermostat, thats when you find out they went obsolete years ago and can't find bits.
You'll also have to do some reworking to get the oil feed to the turbo right.
My kit uses Mocal parts and will do the job it's designed to do.
I've seen plenty of lash up oil cooler kits that do little cooling, at the workshop and on the web, most people seem to then heed the advice that's been given all along and fit the biggest cooler you can at the front.

I saw tour kit, and it looks really grate, but i just can't afford a kit so i was hoping to put together a cheaper solution (at least until I can afford a kit).

I was just wondering with an oil cooler up front and 10m of pipe thats a heck of a lot of extra oil how much more oil would the engine take when doing an oil change for example. Can the standard oil pump cope well enough with the extra oil and distance it has to cover. As im too thinking of fitting an oil cooler to my JX!!. Thanks

I think its an extra 1.5 litres of oil in mine. Which is a good thing....

I've never heard of anyone changing the oil pump. Theres quite a bit of pressure in there so it gets pushed through without any problems...
