you are correct, there should be very little end float at your track rod ends and its an MOT failure, there is no adjustment you have to replace the complete track rod. if you grip the track rod ends and pull them in and out, if there is play then there is a ball joint that has worn. it along with the track rod unscrews and the complete track rod is replaced, they are not too expensive JK and most places have them in stock. When replacing the the new track rod end when it is fully tightened ensure that you indent the tab to prevent the ball joint and track rod from undoing. you can get the grease in packets, I always replace the gaiters and get the grease with the kit, its a graphite grease but not sure of the exact grade.
By the way when the track rods have been replaced the tracking will have to be checked
