turn on heater, wait while high pitched whine and ominous clicking noise transform into worrying sounds from under the van - smell diesel - turn off heater and whilst under van using only wrist movement available to arms force small slippery diesel line into perished and hard rubber pipe held on by rusted ring clamp - without looking. good game, good game. scrape face on underside of van. turn on heater, wait while high pitched whine and ominous clicking noise transform into worrying furnace like sounds from under the van - smell old musty smell being ejected into van from vent; notice smoke rising from under van; get fire extinguisher out of van just in case whole thing goes up; make note to fix exhaust. notice that rest of smoke is coming from other side of van; apologise to passing traffic; make note not to park near other campers when using heater. Feel warmish musty air coming from vent! Look at controls to adjust - use screwdriver in place of missing thermostat dial - push control deep inside control box and spend 10 mins coaxing out with bent wire. take minuscule screwdriver and gently turn thermostat in one direction - slows clicking sound - no discernable change in heat. repeat in other direction -hastens clicking sound - no discernable change in heat. Green light has been on permanently (good thing?) Red light has not been on at all (good thing?). inside of van smells musty and full of diesel fumes but is warm (good thing?).
