Hello
My exhaust is like a colander. Need to get a new one. May as well go for stainless as this van's a keeper.
Seen the JP Exhausts ones as mentioned in the wiki. They look good, anyone got any comments on them?
or can anyone recommend any other make?
Engine is 1900 DG in a 1990 autohomes komet.
thanks!!

4 into 1 header pipe and a motorcycle back box

- thats the way I've gone. Should be able to put a picture up in a day or two. Just another option if budget is tight.

Not a complete stainless system, but its a stainless box - Kawasaki 98 ZX6R Ninja type box (stainless) - £20 from ebay including postage and a header from an aftermarket empi type 4 system (lines up perfectly with early T25 exhaust systems) - cost me £60. About to treat header to a blowtorch, burn off the paint and replace with EHT paint. I would imagine that any T25 that has an end fitting to the silencer box (early watercooled like mine doesn't - hence header pipe) could be adapted to take a stainless (road use only) bike box. What is harder to glean is the 3-bolt spacing as they vary from bike to bike and manufacturer to manufacturer but you can always get a plate made to take one 3-bolt spacing to another type:
There are also carbon-fibre ones around and even 'shorties' (cut down boxes) and there are loads and loads on ebay at under £40 (look for silencer cans). In time will have remaining bits of the system made up in stainless as I go but its a good start and still cheaper than a brand new tinny VW silencer on its own.
You can actually get virtually any 3-bolt cylindical silencer box from a bike to fit providing you pick a reasonably big un so as not to restrict gas flow (puch maxi not recommended!) - you just make an adaptor plate to suit (above) in the same way you have wheel adaptors - not hard to make to be honest. Alternatively I guess you could weld your own flange to any existing system but with future repairs in mind, an adaptor makes more sense.
GTI mad man is right, although not everyone can afford/justify £400-£500 on a system in this economic climate. if you fancy trying different configurations, this is another way to do it and its the ultimate in recycling - cheaper too
Hmmmm... I think this may well be a WIKI. I'd twigged this for a while but kept stum while I had the pick of ebay for possible boxes

As I live in Macclesfield I popped into JP Exhausts earlier in the year and they were working on two T25s at the time and the quality of there work was impressive. Although they don't do exhausts for my Diesel camper, they said they could make one up alot cheaper than the petrol exhausts as the diesel system is a lot simpler,.

Have just looked at the JP site....exhaust will need attention b4 next MOT and am wanting stainless.
Question - is the difference in price tween the carb and injection model the carb pre-heat?
I have a 2.1 on carb....do I need the preheat in this country? Not sure what I have got in there to be honest
Thanks
Emma

Yep, though some 2.1i s (MV & SS?) have the boss for a lamda probe.

Brickwerks stainless manifolds are excellent value and fit, i used these with a cast knuckle, mild steel joining pipe and ordinary silencer. T

We've tried most and believe me when I say Simon's (brickwerks)are the best, we found the jp one was a little tight around the engine carrier and any slight play in the engine mounts would knock like hell on startup and hard gear changes, please also consider Turbo Thomas, they make custom exhausts, we have had some done with large bore headers and they sound awesome, they do a merged system for the boxer to eek out a few more of those lacking horses.

Definitely worth speaking to Turbo Thomas, he made me a custom muffler for our old Bay window last year, really nice work. A very approachable guy, did the work on our van whilst we popped off to the cinema!
Cheers

Stainless box half-breed exhaust. Jap (Kawasaki stainless silencer) mated to type4 header pipes as in pic above. Very low note (not easy to hear in video) - definate performance improvement and total cost - £80. Bit of apron cutting but not much! To be honest, hardest part was taking off the old silencer, requiring (as expected) an angle grinder as nuts were corroded, and the whole reason why I did the silencer swap - sick of corrosion and hassle associated with replacing stock.
If you have the older exhaust system like me, ie the one with /.\ /.\ type exhaust mountings (early 1.9 dg or 2.0 Aircooled), this set up will more or less fit straight on. The header needed a slight modification to the flange where it meets silencer (3-bolt holes not far enough apart to match Kawasaki 3-bolt) so Chickenkoop came up with idea of hacksawing these open then after a little levering with a screwdriver to open them up, welding across the gap - avoiding need for any adaptor. For a gasket I used sheet ally one made from a cardboard template. - all added to WIKI under 'Exhaust'
