Dashboard, heating, sterio are they linked?

Hi, I have bought my first t25 last weekend and I have a few problems allready 
The dashboard lights are on when my lights are switched on and my engine is off, but as soon as the engine starts, the lights go out and i can't see my speedo etc at night, the dim swith is turned up.
My heating is also on full heat regardless of where i set the temperature.
and.... my sterio doesnt work, i have tried different ones to eliminate the possibilty of mine being broken.
My question is... are they linked together or is it just bad luck i have all 3 not working? by the way, my cig lighter works ok.
I havn't got my haynes book yet and im not very good mechanically
, my dad is a pro but is away on holiday for 3 weeks and i really could do with getting it fixed as i hope to go away next week 
I have a 1988 bus i think, two sliding doors, tin top.
It has a 1.9 liquid cooled (78ps)
