We have just heard about a 1990 Westfalia California possibly available (but still in Germany at present) however has a 2.1 Petrol engine and not the Diesel that we would have probably preferred.
Have read some of the posts on here about the obvious mpg differences ie: Petrol 25mpg against Diesel 35mpg approx.
Anything else we should be aware of or comments on a 2.1 petrol engine would be much appreciated. Regards

112 bhp, simple mechanics, smoother delivery, authentic VW, beautiful flat four sound, so easily gassed (LPG) for equivalent 50 mpg economy and even smoother power.

the mighty 2.1 is a fabulous engine.

BUT>>mine don't seem to be as economic as his....I reckon 17-19 round town, 20-23 on a run.....but gassed works out at 38-40 and 40-46 as LPG is half the price of petrol down here.

never driven the diesel, but I do like the 2.1.....so good we fitted three!! (we have three vans before you panic about reliability)

Also, i don't hammer my engines....70 rarely but it will do it no problem unless steep hill, 55-60 on the motorway as a rule...and stops the guage falling faster than a rock off a cliff!!

2.1 is king (18-25MPG) bags of power and its good for pulling off at the lights as you leave the boy racer in his carp french saxo 1.1 for dust

Diesel is a smelly bag of poo

LPG the petrol engine and fuel stays cheap
Diesel is going up and up in price and it smells of a tractor
It also pulls away slower than a Sinclair C5

I like the power and driveability of my 2.1, it's quite a smooth engine and more than quick enough for a van of this size
Economy is another matter, but I didn't buy it for that to be honest; I reckon around 20 mpg around town and short trips, up to 27mpg on longer runs, when using the throttle in a responsible manner, and when fully loaded (see picture) on a run to Cornwall a couple of weeks ago and not holding back on the gas, I got 19mpg on the way down, and 24mpg on the way home without the carp on the roof



Don't be put off, as has been mentioned, they are apparently very good on LPG

I have no idea where in Germany the van is located but it is available and on it's way to the UK. Not going to say too much in case it's not the van for us.
