I've just purchased some chrome hub caps off eBay,but the wheels themselves have been painted a horrid shade of blue. This was hidden behind cheap trim before i replaced them with the proper VW hubcaps. Can anyone advise on the best type of strong durable exterior paint to be applied to the wheels? What colours look best? Glad i got original hub caps so much better and in keeping with the vehicles looks! I did think about Empi alloys but think they look daft on wedgies! (unless lowered).Cheers.

Hammerite Smooth or do it properly and get them blasted and powder coated

What's the price like on getting them blasted and coated? I feel another trip to Halfords coming on.......

Hi - hubby had some old merc wheels powder coated in white for £25 a wheel.

Just a local powder coating place I found in the yellow pages - rang and told them what I wanted first.

I have wellers on my campers and beetle - all in white. Hammerite used.

Give them a good wire brushing and then hammerite will certainly bring them back up to looking something like

I used Black Dulux exterior gloss, because there was some in the shed
Thought it would tide me over til I got some new wheels, but they still look pretty good.

my local powder coater is about 20 quid per wheel to blast and coat, not cheap by they are done and forgot about ,doing them yourself the rust will come back through in no time , and the paint your putting on may react with whats allready on them, you could probably get them all blasted for 20 quid and then finish them yourself with what ever you wish, but it wont last like powder ....

I am based in the Midlands (Nottingham). Anywhere near here able to do the blasting and coating? At a reasonable cost. If not it's a trip to Halfords for some Hammerite. God bless Hammerite and all who use it!

I had mine painted with two pack ... cheap to do (£10 a wheel) (£10 blasted)
after four years still as good as new.

and you can t-cut them if any scratches appear.

I had mine powder coated at a cost of £150 for that they were shot back to bare metal inside and out primered baked powdered abd rebaked, they look great, then one day i got the spare out and noticed it was silver / rusty / cruddy so i got my drill with wite brush attatchment gave it a good going over inside and out de greased it masked it and painted it with wilkinsons black gloss enamel paint and to the untrained eye it looks as good as the others, a full set should only take a day to do and once you've prepped them paint the inside first this way you can turn them over and do the face last minimising the risk of damage, all five wheels should cost £50 max for materials

I just sanded mine and painted em with hammerite satin, look pretty good but then I am Tatty
The rims however, look "pooh", but cash is king in this house, and we aint got a lot
