Heating Question

Does anyone use one of these in their van:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PORTABLE-CAMPING- ... 35a3e2c4d3

I don't have propex/eber or even a leisure battery, so I need something to keep the chill off, although I would never run it all night.

We bought one at the weekend, but on the box, says not to be used indoors and has a picture of a tent with a red X through it. Do they just mean not to be used in a tent? Would it be ok to run in a van if used carefully? I use the cooker stove that use this butane cannister in the van...

I would say your indoors in a tin tent huh?

jeez!
I suppose you have a CO detector then.
But if you ever fell asleep with a burner going and the detector fails...you risk never waking up.
carbon monoxide is a killer.

propex is utterly safe to leave on constantly

We have one somewhere...gave off enough heat in my van to make it toastie in a few minutes, swiftly followed by a sore head! Needs a window open, which kinda negates the heater...

The cooker is used to heat your food only then turned off after 10 minutes (plus you probably have the door/window open to get rid of smell/steam/smoke), the heater you want to heat you and leave on for longer in a sealed area, slowly gassing yourself...

You need to install either an Eber or a Propex, which ever suits you and your wallet. DO NOT use the gas cooker or any gas heater in an unventilated environment. Your blood cells absorb Carbon Monoxide 3 times more readily than they do Oxygen, you will probably not have the chance to even feel slightly poorly and there's a high probability that you (and anyone else in the van) will die.

Even when using the fridge on gas overnight I always use a C.O. detector/alarm and a smoke alarm of course.

Would back up the advice NOT to use one of these in a van. The risk of CO pisioning is too great. In case you dont think it would happen - two weeks ago in our village the owner of the local builders yard died from just this. He had been having problems with fly tipping going on during the night, so camped out in a small shed in his yard with a gas heater going to try and catch culprits in the act. When his employees came to open up in the morning they found the heater still going and their boss dead. Young bloke too. Sorry its a morbid story, but gas heaters and enclosed spaces don't mix.

Propex setup is expensive, no getting away from it (£400+) but is safest solution. Failing that - only if you have correct mains hook up and mains wiring in your van - try a small wattage electric halogen heater to take chill off interior. Electric heaters have their own safety issues - ie dont leave them on all night or unattended. They are a fire risk but at least they wont poison you.

Eberspacher or Propex every time. Buy once, toasty warm for ever :ok

Sadly portable gas heaters are a Darwinian trap to place the opportunity for natural selection in the hands of the hard of thinking.

It takes roughly 10 cubic feet of air to burn 1 cubic foot of gas........ We are talking about rapid Oxygen depletion, followed by the production of carbon monoxide when your dirty little yellow flame goes looking for more oxygen!! Thank you and goodnight!! If this sounds alarming, it is!

I wouldn't.

Hook-up and use electric, or put on a coat and hat. :ok
