gearbox oil change

My gearshift changes seem to be getting less smooth. It's getting harder to go from 1st to 2nd. Also I notice more heat coming from the gearshift boot. I've researched Wiki and the forum and want to change the gearbox oil on my 1987 1.6l diesel 5 speed. I doubt it has been changed or filled for some time. Where do I find the drain plug and filler plug? What is the proper level? Root

the drain plug is on the bottom either a big allen key or hex head bolt, the filler is situtated about half way up the side of the box usually the same style of the drain and i am lead to believ that the box is fill to spill

17mm hex key or bolt head use plenty of realease oil and leave to soak make sure the top one comes out first this one will be tough to get out .use a piece of hose pipe with a funnel in the top through the engine bay to fill goes in easy mine took 5 litres of GL4 grade oil some take less some may take more hope this helps you

heat is probably from the heater pipes.
stiff shifting is one sign of linkage trouble either at the front or near the box.

mine was stiff from first to second and then third to fourth it was discovered that the selector shaft support next to the gearbox had moved.
It was fixed by undoing the two bolt and pushing it back to it's original position.

Just a point to take note of, make sure the fill plug comes out ok before you drain the box.
