1.6 diesel timing marks? update and new question

I have just done the timing belt on my 1.6 n/a out of a golf?
It ran fine before although a little leaky on oil so following all new seals, cam tensioner, cam belt.
She started first time after a little persuasion (sp) but now the engine is knocky but revs fine i assume i am one tooth out on one of the main pulleys (cam, crank,FIP)
If anyone knows of the timing marks that would be great
Thanks in advance Phil

What do you mean by timing marks?
TDC is a mark on the flywheel that you line up with the view hole on the gearbox housing, then theres the cam and the pump to line up.
Have a read on here after you have done a search and then ask some more detailed questions and we'll soon have you on your way.
I think there may even be some active posts with good links in them. In fact - theres the wiki for a good start....
I was one tooth out and it ran like a bag of spanners - so yes, it makes all the difference!

The only marks are on the fly wheel and pump cog.
Thing to keep im mind is that the one for the pump may not be true if it’s been adjusted in the past.
for the cam you need to turn it for the cam lobes for number 1 are bout upwards e.g both valves closed. Then it needs to be locked with a special tool in the slot on the back face of the cam. There is also a locking pin for the pump.
the idea is that you the loosen the cam cog to allow it to rotate without moving the cam as you tension the belt.

ok update the timing is sorted now, no smoke except at full throttle, no knocks bangs or anything out of the ordinary.
There seems to be a lot of air in the fuel line from the filter to the FIP and its causing it to miss at high revs and occasionaly stall when at idle.
Has anyone fitted a fuel pump on the 1.6 N/A??
thanks in advance

Mind seemed to have a bit of a miss fire, engine stuttered, when the pump timing was to retarded (top of pump away from cam cover) however there seems to be a known issue with some fuel filters letting air in. I believe that there is another type with no valve.
Another thing to check is that you have bleed the system, the manual says that you have to discharge around 10cm3 or until it runs solid. Im not clear on how its done exactly so maybe someone else can clarify but basically i think you open the valve on the top of the filter and then open the one on the bottom.
I would be interested if you could comment on my post (see link) when you have a drive.
