Anyone used 2WD heavy duty front spring ona Syncro?

As it says really.
I'm just having some 2WD springs made at the moment, so I dragged out my spreadsheet of spring specs, bit scetchy on some of the details but I did notice something interesting and I'm sure I heard PC52 mention it but it was a while back.

In basic terms, a coil spring, the thicker the wire the firmer the spring, but also coupled to the length of the spring, so a longer spring (more coils) is also usually softer (as it'a basically a torsion bar, but coilled up.)

Looking at spring specs here then a syncro front spring is..

320mm in height, and made from 16mm wire

Whereas a HD 2WDspring is

339mm in height, and made from 18mm wire

Basically, taller and firmer, like I say, the setails I have are a little scetchy, but I do have both of these in stock so i will check the amount of coils tommorow.

I reckon that should give about an inch lift at the front (about 25mm-ish)

I have heard talk about using 2wd front springs to lift the syncro. I think it was on the samba, not shure.

syncroandy has them on the front of his van. I have tryed them but they boynged around abit so changed them back. Russel has them on the front of his 16'' as well as a few spacers. They compress like foowk.

Think Andy has std 2wd ones in... not the HD ones...

I'd think the HD ones would lift a lot more.. longer and stiffer by the sounds of it...

From what I can gather, springs are tempered the same amount, it's the amount of coils and the thickness of the wire that give you the characteristics of the spring.

That said, 2WD front springs (Blue paint marks) should in theory be much of a muchness to the syncro springs, maybe a little softer as the wire thickness is the same, just slightly longer.

The ones I'm on about are Green paint marks.

Do you have access to rating equipment?

I used to rate all my springs in the days when I raced FVW and FF. I used an old drill press and a few bathroom scales. It worked ok and measured KG/cm

No, sorry, I don't
I do however have some scales and a hydraulic press.

That will do as long as you can measure distance. A steel rule fixed in a convenient place should work, as long as you can read distance moved and weight.

Anyway I see from the other thread that your question is answered
