Quick post this. Its chickenkoop's diesel. What the heck should be in that hole then? He may turn up later and tell you more but just posting the photo in advance. This is rear of his engine looking from above.

not quite sure but i think thats the bell housing aint it and that normally has a plug you can take out to see the timing marks on the flywheel...i think
i could be wrong though

The pipes aligned to the black filter can inquiring to ask if that is for a oil cooler.

unscrew the collar (that's what the nut is in there for)and buy the plug from vw you tightwad it's pennies, fit new plug retaining ring and screw back in the collar and put the nut in a safe place in the tool box for future use and pop plug in hole till retiming required.

will sort a new plug, thanks but the q was what should be here, all so yes the 2 pipe go the lengh of the van to a smaill rad infront of the water rad, so i take it it's a oil cooler? only had the van 5weeks now,
