was wondering if anyone could help. twice we have done journeys 20- 40 minutes ( checked water before hand and its been fine) and then at end of journey got stuck in traffic and the engine has over heated ( only happens in traffic) - red light on water spurting out of the water tank in engine when we took the cap off... both times waited till it cooled and then it was fine and set off again till back in traffic and it happened again.

any ideas why this is case took to garage and they did not know why.

i wonder do we not have enough coolant? is something wrong with whole cooling system? we have an automatic and when are stopped in traffic at lights ect we have it in drive should we be putting it in park? thanks to anyone who can help - joy

Thermostat on rad not kicking rad fan in? Thats what mine was. Easy and cheap fix.

Hi there Joy.

You need to get this sorted quickly as our flat 4 water cooled engines can easily get badly damaged by this type of thing due to it creating air-locks and resulting hot spots in the engine.

Yep, as CovKid said, first thing you need to do is check the electric fan on the radiator is working when it is supposed to (like when in traffic !)

I strongly recommend you look in our "wiki" technical section (linked to at the top of all these pages) and look up how to bleed the cooling system of air. As said = Important and likely to need doing NOW if you have had these loss of water issues.

Take the blue cap off the header tank, the one with the pipe going to the expansion tank (it might not be blue but usually is) while the engine is cold. If you can blow and suck through the bit the thin overflow pipe connects to its shagged and get a new one. Brickwerks do them, click here
