hello again, me van wouldnt start just turning not firing, so i checked the engine to find that the dizzy cap had come off, the rotor arm and cap were slightly damaged, the push in and out bit in the dizzy is broke and theres something missing of one side of the rotor arm, i put it all back together and fired it up and it started ran, slightly juddery but was idleing/able to drive.
I thought as temprorary measure id borrow my mates dizzy and rotor, but since ive refitted the van feels like it misfiring, really juddery, lack of power the lot. I know his dizzy/rotor are fine as he drove it today with no probs.
I dont get it his parts are practically new, im not too sure now if i have reconnected it back in the right order? tomorrow i will go buy a new dizzy/rotor and new HT leads. Does any1 have a picture of the correct dizzy/HT leads position, first thing i wanna check. and i wanna get that right with the new stuff i buy.
i finally get me van back on the road and this happens ! typical . . .

You really ought to buy a haynes manual....
Why did you swap the dizzy? why not fit a new cap and rotor arm.. is it the correct dizzy for your engine (not all are the same...) and is the vac advance working? (new vac advance units are available for sensible £) is it timed correctly?? lots of questions, but a haynes will help....

engine is 1.9 petrol DG.
Changed the HT leads/dizzy and rotor, the van is exactly the same no change, still no power not pulling, is it misfiring, the timing out? im not sure how id check this. the haynes manual shows the position of the rotor arm and the notches on the wheel, they position do look different to the book but i cant tell for sure. Slightly disheartened at the minute with it, im betting it is something simple but i just cant figure it out....

I've had a few problems as a novice diy mechanic (am not suggesting that you are btw, just being honest about me own limited experience) when tinkering with the ignition system, some things I've learned from my tinkering:
(a) brand new parts aren't necessarily free from faults and it's easy to end up buying poor quality parts from supposedly reputable suppliers
(b) despite being really careful, it's easy to put the rotor arm or dizzy cap on the wrong way round
(c) spark plugs need checking and gapping or replacing more often than Haynes suggests
(d) only change one part of the ignition system at a time. Run the van after each bit has been changed to check how it's going
(e) the little caps on the end of the plugs that the leads push onto, need to be removed so that the leads will attach securely
There's many on here with a lot more knowledge and experience of these things than I have though.
