To be fair to the man who gave the price,,,,,,tis not so simple to fit 1/2 a panel with out making it look like a dogs back leg , plus he may have priced the job high in an effort to frighten you off having it done.....

Theres welding and theres welding, can be up to 750/day dependant on vehicle and requirements.
The welding is the easy bit, there is all the stripping out of the adjacent interior, old panal removal etc etc, it can be an easy job and it can get involved, as you know and others have said it needs to be done right or its just a bodge,

Back to the Arc v Mig v Tig debate here. (Hope not!).
Tony (of Nicola and Tony fame) had the right idea. Get on a course at night school and learn to do it yourself. Maybe make a few bob welding for others too. (Mindst you he has now bought a different van :rofl ). Joking Tony, honest!
Price did seem a little on the high side, depending on what you were going to remove first!

buy a mig welder out your local rag,you might even get some of the equipment thrown in with the deal and have a go..if its not your thing ...sell it on and take it to the garage

if it is your thing..place another feather in your cap .weld the problem areas and decide if you are then gonna sell it on or keep it :ok

shop around a bit, I got quoted over £2k for some welding recently - I mean a LOT of welding - I ended up paying £600 but that included new brakes, tyres and a load of other stuff as well. Still a lot of money but far less than the original quote so its worth checking out some other welders in the area.

buy a welder, spend time grinding after and make it look nice, very satisfying doing it yourself, and save a shed load of beer tokens.
