1.9DG to 21.MV Info

Ive decided to buy a 2.1MV engine to rebuild myself rather than a recon (possibly opening a can of worms buy hey ill give it a go!)
Ive search on here and know most the of the 1.9 bits can be kept in order to run a 2.1 engine but im not sure if literally everything can be used, i will be using my original carb rather than running fuel injection.
I won the engine on ebay a few days ago but havent got it yet. Heres a pic of what the engine goes with, which is very little its quite bare.
Basically i just want to know if theres any bits i could do with getting extra with the engine (the seller is westfalia shop on ebay so has other bits for the mv if needed)
Thanks!

Goodness!
I have a 2.1 DJ harness with ignition amp and AFM etc, for sale, if that would help (I doubt it) and some of the cooling system engine bay pipework (ring main stuff)

1.9 to 2.1 isnt a great leap... but that engine looks decidely cruddy..
all your cooling etc will work fine on the 2.1, but add an oil cooler..
Does the case part number on your 1.9 end in a "B" (on the sides of the sump) then you could use that case if its in better nick than the 2.1....

Thanks for the reply toomanytoys
Thats good then if all the pipework will fit. I had read the 1.9 and 2.1 casings are the same i didnt know it was only on some of them, mines a later engine ill take a look of the code on the weekend. Though to be honest ill see how the 2.1 cleans up first!

Im going to start th rebuild soon and have another couple of questions if anyone can help.
As you can see in the picture there is no thermostat housing, and the 2.1 housing is not available from VW anymore.
My current 1.9DG engine has a metal housing and i assume the 2.1 uses the plastic one, and i dont really want to remove things from the 1.9 as i will be selling it complete.
Other than sourcing a 2.1 housing will i have to do the following modification at this link?
http://www.brick-yard.co.uk/forum/21-th ... 44261.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Also what do you guys think is the best and safest way to clean the engine without getting bits falling it?
Thanks

early 1.9 engine had an aluminium housing next to water pump, completely different shape!
later dg and 2.1 had plastic housings
syncro has aluminium housing similar to plastic one
jk had a batch of 1.9 plastic ones but i think they sold out.
i have a new plastic 1.9 and 2.1 stat housing hear if you get stuck!

Thanks for the reply Billy though it seems ive been abit thick and i dont need the housing at all, i have the aluminium housing as the engine is from a syncro.
I need the piece that goes on top of the housing over the thermostat with the bleed screw on it,i take it that part isnt available new? I cant see it listed on brickwerks or jk.

How much did you pay for that motor as a matter of interest ?

Do classicparts have a website Aidan? Though i think it might be easier and cheaper to find a 2nd hand one in the uk.
I paid £110 for the engine delivered, the only thing wrong with it is that it sprung a leak on one of the heads.

@ fix - you may find some useful info in this (longish) thread re fixing a WBX with a leaking head =

make sure that all the bits you need are available before you start spending your hard earned on it. as you`ve found out some bits for these engines are nla.
personally i wouldn`t invest in a wasserboxer as there are better options out there.
i`m in a similar dilema atm as my mv has had a lot spent on it and still needs a few quid spending to make it 100% but i intend a conversion soon so i begrudge spending on it.

I think before i start spending any money i need to make sure i can remove all the head and exhuast studs.
Im tempted just to replace at the head gaskets and thats it rather than stripping the engine. The previous owner than the engine for many miles before it sprang a leak, he was convinced other than the leak it was a great engine and never missed a beat.
Other than the top thermostat cover and gaskets etc i dont think theres much else i will need.I think ill probably replace the water pump aswell as its cheap to change,
If anyone thinks theres other bits i will need id appreciate your input

Very sensible !

I wouldn't bank on doing a head gasket and head to case seal job without doing the liner to case "O" rings too, as when removing the hard you are very likely to disturb them, hence then needing to replace them, and this is a BIG job, (see posts in my link to the thread on this above)
If you are going ahead and buying gaskets, best get them from Brickwerks as he only sells good quality and his come with the special sealant you need for the studs etc. Gaskets sets are not cheap either

(esp if the job goes t1ts up

)
