Not the van its the golf... power loss after cambelt change

Hi guys,
Not a question about the van but given your considerable knowledge hoping you may also have a few suggestions about this prob (it is at least A VW)...

Just had my timing belt changed on a mk3 tdi golf and the power has gone completely - seems as though the turbo has stopped working and car wont go over 30mph up hills  .

Is this going to be down to the garage or is it likely that something else has gone wrong/been unmasked by the timing belt change?

Appreciate this isn't the van so might attract a few uncomplimentary comments but any ideas would be very much appreciated!

Ross

If it was fine before it went in to be changed then they have 'mucked it up' as they say in the trade.....

Check that they have reconnected the hoses from the intercooler to the turbo fella, if your unsure and its defo not running right since coming out of the garage take it back, if the boost pipes are all connected correctly it may well be incorrectly timed in which case don't drive it get the garage to recover it back to there premises.

keep us posted :ok

Take the Happycampers advice or you will be one very unhappy Golf TDi owner, it could be pipework but probably cam belt is not right, a tooth or two out can make a big difference AND be potentially lethal for the engine.

Checked under the bonnet but couldn't see anything loose so back it went this morning so I'm waiting for the mechanic to get back to me - what are the chances of 'sorry about that, it was my fault - no charge?!' I wont be holding my breath :?

if it was like that as soon as you picked it up it is 99.9% something they have done, weather they admit it or not, as already suggested i thought about cambelt being a tooth out seems the most likely to me.

Ok maybe I was too quick to judge my 'friendly' local mechanic - he admitted his mistake and corrected it - it was a loose air flow pipe, as suggested above - the pocket rocket is now back to its former glory :P

Thanks for the help, very much appreciated!

Glad you got it sorted buddy, i,ve roadsided quite a few turbo deisels for poor performance and its usually a pipe off on the intake side.
