Hi guys since doing my gearbox change i now have a strange starting issue 1.9 petrol d.g code

sometimes vans starts fine other times you have to turn the key 5-10 times to get it to start

when the faults occuring and you turn the key you get the iginition lights come on but nowt from the rear?

starter is brand spanking new i have added extra earth from starter to chassis

any ideas?

imobiliser? how to check?

I would check the contact of the thin wire on the starter motor. Give it a good clean up and make sure you have a good connection. I had similar fault on mine and this is what it turned out to be.

yes andy the trigger wire with the crimp on. I presume ermie meant the white switch connected to the bottom of the ignition barrel. If you take off the steering column shroud you wiil see it in there. These are also known to fail, but i would check trigger wire first as that won't cost you anything.

And make sure all connections are pushed home on the column. Had that happen to me in the past and it gives you palpitations.

The ignition switch swap takes about 40 minutes, costs under a tenner from GSF.
You will have to strip upper column and remove the aluminium barrel housing in order to gain access to the switch retaining screw.
Not as bad as it sounds honest.

No new key required...

The only *difficult* bit was persuading the black plastic collar that sits on the steering column to hold bits in place to come off. Its on there real tight....need ed some gentle persuasion with screwdriver I think.

make sure the signal wire isnt rotten internally before bugering about with the switch, it sounds too coincidental with themoving about of the gearbox to me.... if in doubt run a temp signal wire from the front to the solenoid alongside the original to proove the point

If you find it is the big crimp on the main starter cable to battery that is the issue test the resistance using a multimeter, if its that remove the cable, and if there is enough length of cable go to a local auto electrician and ask them nicely to crimp on a new terminal, they should charge you about £3 if you are unlucky. If you are near Hereford/worcester/Chepstow drop it round and I will do it FOC, lmao.
