Try pulling the cold start lever, if that helps then either get the pump timed up properly, or replace the pump.

I have the same problem the engine is 2 years old with about 5000 miles on it. It was the same from new it will start fine from cold and ok 5 minuets after turning off but if you leave it from 10 minuets to about an hour it takes about 5 seconds to start. It seems to be when the engine is too warm for the glow plugs. I have also been told it's pump timing as Simon Says. It has never let me down so i just live with it.

yup, had the same problem. The temperature sensor that tells the hot plug relay that the engine is warm/hot did just that. I checked the timing and it was OK and the only way it would start when it is warm was to disconnect the sensor. Only problem that I can see by doing this is that the hot plugs come on for a time at every start and may shorten their life.

Here you go mate,
These instructions show a proper VW DTI that screws into the end of the pump but I use a standard magnetic base one but if you do this it must be anchored very firmly.

This is a better one http://www.vwdieselparts.com/injtim.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Hope this helps but go on fit a 1900 1Y :)
