Has anyone carried a open canoe (Canadian style) on top of a van with a Westy Pop top? If so what did you use for a roof rack?

I am looking to carry one with me when I go camping so don't want to have to unbolt the racks every time I want to put the roof up. I will have to remove the canoe of course but I don't want to have to remove racks as well.

Depending on the length of the canoe have you considered making a sling for your tow ball so you could stand it up the back of the van secured with a couple of straps trapped in the rear door at the top? Probably viable on a high top with a tow bar and rear luggage rail.

Nope. It is going to be a 4 man job probably 15 or 16 foot.

rob, westfalia did some brackets that bolted on to the lifting part of the roof and were long enough to sit in the gutters to take the load when the pop top is down. they sometimes come up for sale on ebay but i`ve not seen them for a while.

i had my local engineers make me 6 brackets with short thule arms and i have one right at the front mounted on the gutter so 4 bars in total all the same hight.

works a treat for surf boards would be great for my canoe if or when i find one at the right price.
