New fuel pump on a DG engine

A few days ago my 1985 Autosleeper with DG engine would not start. On checking I found that fuel was not getting to the carb. I removed the carb and tried it out on the bench, it would not lift fuel from a can next to it on the bench and even after priming it would only pump a feeble amount. I 'phoned around the local suppliers and was told by two of them that their catalogues only listed electric pumps for the 1982 to 1990 DG engine, one offered a Pierburgh at £89.85 + vat + £6 delivery, one offered a pump that would fit but had the inlet and outlet in the wrong place for £40 + vat and Bridgwater VW had a new pump for £58.85 inc vat. I ordered the pump from VW and it arrived the following day, it is a Pierburgh which is the same as the original except the inlet is 8mm instead of 6mm. I had to make up an 8mm to 6mm adaptor to fit the inlet pipe to the pump. After fitting it the engine would not start before the battery was nearly flat, it was not enough to lift the fuel from the tank. I recharged the battery and fitted a short piece of tube to the inlet of the pump and ran it to a can of petrol, the engine started straight away. I ran it for a short while and then refitted the inlet pipe to the pump and restarted it. It is now running OK, touch wood!!
