Cleaning the steering wheel

My steering wheel is getting on for 28 years old, and has 28 years-worth of blood, sweat, and tears on it, and generally feels very grubby. You can kind of gouge bits of the embedded muck off, rather like you'd pick bits off a block of Morrocan
Can anyone advise on the best way to clean it and get it back, at least partway, to it's former glory? I did see something in one of the VW magazines on cleaning steering wheels a few months ago, but i think that magazine has gone forth to be recycles now.....
Thanks in advance

A regular wipe down with a baby wipe keeps em clean... but I think you might have to use some hot soapy water with perhaps a "greeny" pan scourer to get layers of crud off... YUK........

Easier to clean when you take it off ..then you can submerge it in a tub of hot soapy water while scouring.
