Break fluid leaking into drivers footwell. Help please.

The break fluid warning light came on (F reg T25 1600 petrol) so I checked the level at it was low so I topped up. I then discovered break fluid on the rubber mat in the drivers footwell. It seem to be dripping down from behind the stearing colomn. The breaks seem to be working fine (and I keep checking the levels). Anyone got any idea what the problem could be and or the likely cost to put it right? I've spent loads on the van recently and I just have't got any cash spare at the moment, but I don't want to run any risk of break failure. Mechanic told me it would probably need a new break cylinder
but he doesn't know which one (as there are various types) until he strips it down. He qouted 100 - 200 pounds parts + 100 + for a days labour would this be about right?
Thanks.

if its leaking into the foot well then its the master cyl.. Not sure there are different types (will have a check)... maybe if it doesnt have a servo assist as the on the 1.6CT it was an option IIRC...

Thanks all.
At the moment the leak appears to have stopped! which makes me wonder if I could have overfilled the last time I topped up. Would the fluid be pumped out under pressure if I had overfilled it? Anyway thanks for the help and advice. If it starts to leak again I might take up Ricicles offer of assistance (thanks). In the mean-time I'll keep a check on it each day and see what happens.
I wish there was some kind of course I could go on to learn more about the mechanical workings of my van (and how to fix commom problems). I read the manual a lot but nothing can beat being shown how to do something. This site is great in that it has so many knowlegable people willing to help and I hope I get to meet some of you nice people at Cromer in October.

i had same problem,,, it was a case of over filling but it took about a week for it to stop dripping, i fort it was the master cylinder, but as stated just turned out to be fullup tomuch, just keep an eye on it and the levels
