I need some advice...
I have a 1.6td Jx 1989 Caravelle.
How would i know if my flywheel was missing some teeth?
Crunching when starting?
If it is the flywheel..how on earth do i get to it to inspect it...
and probably more importantly how do i remove it and change it?
Engine out?gearbox?
Thanks in advance
James

why do you suspect the flywheel?
starter motors are the weakest link

Missing teeth..........Trip to the dentist perhaps?
How about removing the starter motor, could check that like Kev says and then, by looking into the hole where it was fitted, check the flywheel? Might need an inspection mirror and a lamp.
Probably a bit difficult to turn a diesel over by hand, but hey, it should be possible. Never had any diesel dealings, but someone who has will be able to elaborate.
Petrol...... you might take the plugs out to make turning over easier, diesel ??

Take the starter out and check the teeth, not realy any need to check all the way round the engine only stops in two places just check either side of where the engine stopped and then turn the engine 180 deg and check again.

Turn it by putting a socket on the end of the crankshaft and by looking through the aperure where the starter fixes to the block each tooth can be examined one by one if need be. A tip for you put a chalk mark on one of the teeth or you wont know if you have done a 360 on the flywheel
