Help! cylinder head studs

Took the engine out yesterday, that was straight forward apart from possibly cracking my rib trying to pull it out from under the van.
Started taking apart tonight and all fine up to the point of undoing the studs on the cylinder head, plenty of plusgas but they still unbolted from the engine block rather than the bolt end.
The two end bolts are fine as they fit through the barrels but the two middle ones are now stuck as the holes are smaller. I've tried more and more plusgas, holding it with vice grips, ended up breaking them, still no give on the bolts. Tried heating with a heat gun, still no give.

Anybody had this before? Am i looking at trying to heat up more with flame or cutting them off and replacing?

Any advice greatly appreciated before i do any damage to the head.

Also would like to get rid of heater exchange setup. Can't afford SS at the moment. Anybody know if there are replacement pipes to the back box for a 2l Aircooled.

Thanks

Yep flames will do it :)

I use a hand held gas blow torch thing for this type of job.
You can get it to produce a fairly fine jet of flame and heat the head up pretty hot before any worries about damaging stuff !

Seen pictures of "J" tubes and i couldn't see how they would fit a 2l. Picture was probably for a 1600.
Have you tried these?

Thanks John

I'll get the flame thrower out tonight.

Is it best directing the flame at the bolt or the stud?
