brakes

Hi all, i have an 82 tin top with a 1.6 ct lump which used to have the 2l engine and therefore has the larger brake cylinder.
when i brake i can put my foot to the floor and i does not seem to stop to well, i have bled them and the shoes and pads are pretty new and I'm not loosing any fluid..... any ideas ?

Bleed em again, if your not loosing fluid you dont have a leek, any pressure if you pump the pedal ? could be that the master has gone caput.
your pedal should not go near the floor. bleed them again on all four wheels and see how you get on.

Check your disc callipers make sure they are not siezed, as this will give the same affect as master cylinder non functioning,( Brake Fade) Fluid Boil

Do you have the vaccuum pipe attatched at the engine end of the van? My van also used to have the 2l engine in it before I changed it for the CT and you have to drill the manifold to accept a fitting to plug the brake servo pipe onto, otherwise you won't have servo assisted braking and will be very hard work to stop van moving!
Servo pipe comes out in top left corner of engine compartment as you are looking at it from the back.

I havn't laughed so much in ages!!!

Sorry... I must apologise! But with a CT engine, you can just stick your feet out the door and stop it!

Not with with four blokes and four surfboards and a load of beer.... you need good anchors then...

Rear shoe adjusters back off way too far.......
air in the system...

Just bled all the brakes and is a tiny bit better, but on examining the servo vacum hose on the rear lefthand side of the engine bay there is only a hose to the inlet manifold and no non return valve, perhaps this is the problem?
Unable to update my profile, but I'm in north Devon and fairly near to a few good Van specailists but wanted to sort this myself...

If the peddle is going to the floor then it aint a servo issue (this only offers assistance to pressing on the brakes) you need to get a firm peddle first...
When you say bled them you do know how to do that and have used approx 1L of fluid to do this?? (well co-ordinated with an assitant pressing and releasing the brake pedal whilst you are opening and closeing the bleed screw, I only ask as I helped someone out that though bleeding the braks meant like your radiators in the house, ie crack it open for a second to see if air comes out

)
Inspected the master cyl and found no leaks? (I wonder if the seals have failed internally and its just bypassing)
Inspected the brakes and hoses etc and found no leaks?
Its not losing fluid is it?
Have you adjusted the rear shoes up on the adjusters so they are just touching, then backed off one click?? (I have never tried the brakes in a van when the shoes are backed right off, but when they are not adjusted properly up the peddle can be quite "long")

I tend to adjust rear shoes so they 'just' rub. And remember when refitting hubs, you generally need to press the pedal and pull the handbrake up a few times to centralise them, at which point you may be able to adjust them up a lot more.

Yeah..m I should have added the l"ift hand brake/stamp on the brakes readjust and repeat" routine.. CK...
