Hi All-
Have a dirty diesel (1.6 JX)with a recurring alternator issue, I say alternator basically over a non specific period of time 100 - 250 miles +-the fixing bolts shear off.Leaving it loose or detached and the V belt not running so no battery charging or water pumping. Have free turned the pump and alternators by hand but can find nothing untoward. It has a new belt with no undue sign of wear.

Bearings/ alignment ?

Are you using high tensile bolts? Are you correctly tensioning the belt? Are you using the full complement of bolts i.e. two as the pivots - ideally just snuck up and locked with nylock nuts and one on the adjustment bracket with a thick washer between the nut/bolt and the slot in the bracket? Compliance on these points should provide adequate longvity. Any misalignment should be detectable using MK1 Eyeball and dodgy bearings should be detected by giving the shaft a spin with the belt off and applying lughole or resting human head on screwdrive applied to alternator body. I have been suspicious about low RPM vibration in diesel engines ever since they replaced the London Trolley busses with those damned sick making smelly diesel Routmaster - spit!
