Oil leak - Pushrods??

I have an oil leak that is now leaving a pool rather than drips. Have cleaned the engine off once as the whole underside gets covered. Having spoken to someone at rtth they mentioned the pushrods. if these are the silver tubes underneath then i can say there is loads of oil round them and could be it. i don't have the mechanical skills to try doing it myself. Can anyone recommend an Aircooled (2.0l) mechanic close to coalville, leics area??

cheers

Actually, you're quite lucky as changing pushrod tubes and/or seals on a 2.0 Aircooled is the easiest of them all. Takes about 30 mins at most and doesn't involve engine disassembly. Just take rocker cover off, remove valve gear (two nuts) and tap or pull tubes outwards through head. Refit with new seals, replace valve gear, replce rocker cover - job done. Up to you but not a hard job that one.

cheers for the info, had a look and to be honest...i would still rather get someone who is switched on and can identify things i can't when doing this. So if anyone is close to Leics or knows a good Aircooled mechanic...........................

Not close to Leicester but, if you fancy a weekend camp in York, I'l do them for you for nothing. You just buy the tubes and seals and drive up here. Can't get to Leicester just yet though.

cheers meggles, thats really good of you. I've been recommended someone local and might have to go with that due to the amount leaking everywhere and could probably do with it having a good look at before i drive any real distance.

well, I did it!!! ordered the selas, followed all the advice on here and gave it a go. There were 4 nuts though not too on the rocker assembly thingy as each side were in 2 pieces?? Went to start it and............ clattering banging, just about started and eventually battery was too flat. I really thought i had knackered it!!!

Charged it up for half hour, turned it over and fired first time with no noise!! :D . Somebody please tell me this is normal, is it the oil getting round or something?? :|

Calm down!!! Have a drink or something. You'll have loads of rattle from the hydraulic tappets until they fill with oil. If your's stopped very quickly it sounds like you may have a good engine! Mine used to take a run of some 7 or 8 miles 'til the rattles stopped. Well done on doing a great job.
Now, to give myself a safeguard! Yes, you can cause damage if you've done something wrong but, going by what you have described I would say you're gonna be fine!

Alas, following Vanfest I seem to have an oil leak that might be worse than before!! Had a good look and can see that two of the pushrod tubes are leaking although I don't know if this is ALL the problem. Not sure why 2 didn't seat/seal properly??

trying to face removing them and do the job again on them 2 and will see if it resolves the leak....Bugger!!!!!

Eddie,
there was some discussion on here about pushrod seals for the Aircooled....try searching different combinations and see if you can find it. Some places were mentioned for good seals.

Well done for giving it a go, though. And keep going, you will get there

:ok

Cheers Em,

when you say combinations, as in the seals themselves or the tubes positioning? I took them all out believing they were the same size...I hope thats's true!! I got the seals from VW Heritage.

Oh no they aren't!!! The seals on the outer end are a bigger diameter than those on the inner end of the push rod tubes. I wouldn't have thought that the seals would have failed so quickly, regardless of quality, in such a short time. Unless damaged on fitting! Carefully check that rocker cover gasket is not leaking. You'll get there!
