1.6 diesel engine Lack of Dip Stick!

I own a 1983 1.6 diesel RHD Manual converted van which I am in the process of doing up, I have a problem I can not find the dip stick! most pictures I have found show a dip stick that starts mid engine and bends over the top to the rear, or some have a dip stick in the filler tube. I have neither. I have found a blanked drilling in the block but this seems to have been there from manufacture and there seem to be no drilling on the sump. Does anyone have any ideas?

Early diesels had the dipstick (orange plastic!) in the filler tube and a special filler tube cap with a hole in the middle for said dipstick. Don't know if they can be got anywhere.

Reason why many of them have been exchanged for a normal cap (sans dipstick) is that ailing diesels have a tendency to relase a bit of pressure into the sump and the plastic dipstick offers no sealing powers whatsoever ...cue the oil spewing all over the place.

Mine's behind the the flip number plate, but it's not diesel!

No harm in flipping down the cover the number plate is on &
having a peek.
