2.1 WBX Intermitent hicup at 3000RPM

Hi All
my 2.1 WBX or transmission has just started to produce an intermittent hiccup tonight. Vans a syncro with no decoupler viscous replaced about 12 months ago.
Drove about a 50 mile round trip and it started doing it about 2/3 of the way back. Just suddenly started to feel like it wasnt firing on all cylinders at about 3K RPM, let foot off gas reapplied and all was ok! Another 3 miles down the road same again. Loads of shaking and rattling foot off gas and back on problem went.
I have a few ideas but would like to know if others have had a similar problem and what it was.
Ive been running it on 95 RON and Im not sure if it maybe a pre detonation, issue although Ive been going to and from work in it for the last two weeks and no problem, engine not running hot etc.
Also do prop shafts cause intermittent rough running, or do they just go and not get any better?
Any pointer would be a real help, Im mainly used to Aircooled vehicles, so on a bit of a steep learning curve at the mo.
