oily water

Hi,

I drive a '84 T25 with a 1.9 td mark 3 golf engine in (code 1Y)

broke down on way from bristol to padstow (sudden onset of steam coming out the rear!) naturally, pulled over, let engine cool and checked water levels (none!). Kind Mr AA man came to fix split pipe that had caused the problem but commented that the water was rather oily and suspected head gasket problem.

Van not normally loosing any water (drove back from padstow without loosing an inch) and drives as normal....does head gasket sound likely, or is there something more basic (ie cheaper) I should rule out first?

and if head gasket sounds plausable...do people have any views on the stop leak type products on sale? (Kseal etc)

A good holiday was had not withstanding the unscheduled stop!

thanks all!

Oil in water could be from other sources... K seal etc wont cure it as if its not losing water, then the oil must be at greater pressure.. therefore Kseal wont work...

Oil cooler is likely..
Head gasket, could be...

Prev "contamination" not cleaned out?

Prob a good idea to clean the system out and refill with some nice fresh coolant and see what happens.. any oil in there is gonna take a while to remove though..

thanks - I'm going to take the refill with new coolant option and see what happens!
