How to remove rear brake back plate???

I know there is a wiki that talks about rear brake back plates, but are there any guides, tips or info on how to remove/replace the backplates???? (not got my trusty Haynes to hand to check if they tell you!)... I think someone mentions on another thread that the stub axel needs removing to do this or maybe it was just the hub nut, I cant remember!?!
Any help from you guys would be great.
Cheers
Mat

Did this yesterday matey. Remove hub nut, drum, then either remove whole shoe assembly or as I did, undo slave cyclinder bolt on reverse, two bolts at the bottom that hold the brake adjuster on then remove whole thing, bringing it over the end of the axle and setting it aside. In my case I was renewing an axle bearing so saw no point in disturbing brake assembly but if you need yours removed and on its own, you'll need to disassemble shoes, springs etc.

Cool. So apart from needing a fat man to jump on the long bar to get the hub nut off there are no real nasty bits. Nothing like removing the axel or a frontal lobotomy required!?

Just in case....
At the bottom of the backplate, there is a locating bracket for the brake shoe bottoms.
This bracket has a dowel pin that passes through the backplate into another thingy....
It can be difficult if rusty.
Suggest copious amounts of WD40 then copious amounts of tea or coffee whilst it does its magic.
Then use a drift to drive it out.
If your lucky and its newish, it will pop out.
If not, just keep bashing, its not retained by anything else, it just feels that way.
Hope this helps,
Myk.

backplates on our mirtle were well rotern, i had to remove the hub nut with a grinder tho as they would not budge, even with a scaff bar and a fat blerke.
Replaced with new ones for obvious reasons.......
our mirtle prefers a grinder for anything i havnt removed allready, i should never have bought a van from the Scottish coast

Will be attemting this tonight finally!!!!!! ...3/4 drive socket set up to 50mm brought, large scafold post to be stolen from neighbouring building work (hope the rest dont fall down!) and lots of pies eaten.
...getting the split pins out was a pain enough last night! ...if no joy, im gonna grind the feckers off!!!!!
No matter what, I still love these rusty old girls.

'Evenin all' - Normally WD40 and an old thin screwdriver should knock the split pins out.

...2nd pin came out pretty easy in the end, both rusted to hell and well an truly wedged in but 2nd one no where near as the 1st (lots of prodding, and banging and plenty of WD40 and was still a bitch).
UPDATE TIME! ..After a lot of tapping, banging, lubing, pushing and pulling it was impossible to get the hub nuts off (and I mean impossible!!) it was time for the grinder, that got the nuts off!
Had another nightmare getting the shoe pivot inserts (I think thats what they are called!) again LOTS more banging twisting pulling and eventually they came out!!!!
Anyway, New back plates on, new shoes and spings on etc, took 2 mechanics who (were!) my mates nearly 4 hours, and the hubs and drums arent even back on and adjusted yet!!!
One slight problem tho, dont know what they are called but the pin things that slot into the washer jobby with the cross head on it, the ones from the Brickwerks springs n bits pack are too short!! What are these pins called and where can I get some that are the same size as the original ones?!

Will do, will give him a call tomorrow, all the springs n bits are cool, and as you say, normally top top stuff, so was a touch shocked when they said they were a bit too small.
