Does anyone have a tried and tested method of improving the stability of the door mirrors. I have had several and they have all ended up flapping in the wind. I have broken at least one from overtightening as well. If there is a superior make that lasts I will buy one but am reluctant to keep buying more of the same quality.

best ones are the original vw ones.the after market ones seem to be carp...
this is worth a try.
1.spray the nuts with plusgas.
2.take off the nuts.the spring.and the half round piece of metal.
3.give the tapered shaft a good emery clothing.
4.grease the shaft.and re assemble.

isant there something about adding a washer or two?

One of the scrap ( ) vans I bought had a "fix". The mirror was (I assume) set up in the correct position and then a small hole drilled through the base where it pivots and a small split pin pushed through. The end where the "legs" came through was countersunk and a bit of sealer was put over the hole. I guess the mirror would break on impact but at least it stopped it moving. The only improvement I can think of is genuine replacements.

I need to look into the availability of original mirrors. I had thought of fixing/gluing them in place but would like the option of turning the drivers side in where I park. I will experiment with a knackered one.

The emery cloth does work though - can vouch for that. Mine do this too so you're not alone ole fruit.

I solved my last replacement (carp) one by trying a add an extra washer trick..
It really did do the job!

I only had to adjust it again when it was really gusty winds

gen ones are ok.

but which ever ones , if you keep moving them , like twice a day they will go loose, i never move mine, if i have to park where it looks like the mirrors going to get it, i either turn the wheel into the kerb full lock and park with one wheel on the kerb, or turn the wheel to the middle of the road full lock and see if the clever barstewards can hit the mirror and miss the wheel, or i leave the a*** end out a foot so they have to go round it...

I have been driving without any movement for a weeek or three now. I cleaned it up, roughed it with some emery, applied a liberal amount of loctite threadlock and tightened.

I used the plumbers favourite, PTFE tape, around the thread then tightened as much as possible - hasnt sagged in the wind since.

I then tried to fix the passenger side one and it was so rusted in there that the bolt just snapped off on the screw - bugger!
