Alright u'll have noticed i'm posting often these days the joys of owning an older Aircooled bus this post focuses on the metal covering the engine and engine bay. does anyone else have real problems accessing the plugs? i keep losing the things when taking them out /trying to put them back. is the cover needed over the engine? has anyone cut bigger access holes over the plugs?

one more thing i'm changing the fuel lines can the t-junction in the engine bay with the bolt on the top be replaced by an ordinary t junction?

You need a spark plug socket with a rubber intert inside it that "holds" the spark plug....

No you cant take away the cooling tin or make bigger holes in it... that like running a water cooled engine with no coolant or holes in the radiator.

what i find is..... because of the leads i use, the nipples have been taken off the top of the spark plugso a spark plug socket with rubber insert WONT grip the plug, what i do is put the nipple back on first with some long nose pliers, just a couple of turns there quite easy to getm on and its just enough for the socket to grip the plug every time

Remove the tin, fry the engine i was aware the surrounding tin played a role in the cooling but not the actual tin over the engine. my bus currently has no engine bay seal. is this a bad idea long term?

on the plug socket front i think i'll get a magnetic one

VW put the tinware and the seal there for a reason.

The tinware is there to aid cooling and the seal prevents hot air circulating in the engine bay.

If you remove any of the tinware or there's some missing...like the seal...you're in big danger of over-heating the engine......not good!
