Starter for a diesel

And another thing: What starters fit a 1.6 diesel? Will a Golf one fit or is it only a 1.6 T25 that will fit. I want to take this one out to recondition it but want to buy a spare/temporary replacement form a scrapyard.

Pretty sure specific to a T25 Diesel... Gone up a lot lately, even GSF ones are £100 exchange

There are two types, fat ones and thin ones :)

I was told at GFS, that half the ones returned (exchanges) were in fact, perfectly OK. Probably joking a bit, but the moral is.. make sure it's the starter before chopping it in.

Are you having problem with your current one?
I've just had a new gearbox fitted and started having starter problems when I got it back.
Every time I hit the solanoid with a hammer is would start so I though it was knacked and I'd get a new one.
Luckly I check the old on directly on a battery before buying a new one as it turned out to be a bad earth between the bellhousing and the starter, when I hit it with the hammer in must have earthed.
Worth checking before you spend any money

I will be checking VERY carefully tomorrow. Just wanted to see if I could locate a spare to use whilst I check this one. At over £100 I don't think Il be buying a new spare  Thanks for replies. :ok

keith..windysurfer had the same problem as me and we fixed it exactly the same way..just clean up the bellhousing face and the face on the starter that mates to it...also check the braid link from the solenoid to the starter for corrosion as mine also had gone there...in parts it was like rusty wire wool

Will be having a good look later. Just had Bev and Steve and family over. What a smashing family. There are some lovely people on here aren't there.
I will try a jump lead as an earth when it happens again and see if that proves anything.

Tried the substitute earth.. nothing. Fortunately the starter packed up altogether so it was easy to check everything. Intermittent faults are such a nightmare  Anyway, I removed starter, turned out to be a very badly corroded connection from battery+ side to solenoid. (Guess who had a spare :D ).
All is well now and no new starter to buy! Cleaned and lubed all other connections as a precaution.
Thanks guy's! :ok
