Been looking at my 5 speed gear change.
Can you still get the ali guides that at the bottom, if so does anyone know the part number.
Mine are quite worn.............



Also the two rubber boots that go over the spring/stop thingy.
Mine fell apart on contact............

Boots are no longer available from VW (that's what Carrs Exeter have told me, not always true!)
Anyone fitted something else that fits?

We could do with an 80/90 section just for obsolete parts that could be substituted for other manufactured or household items. Washing machine inlet pipe seems to work well for servo takeoff pipe!

Looks to me as if these are what you need, you will have to search for the boots!

Not wishing to Hijack your thread KarlT. but my five speed lever on my 1.6 td looks worse than yours. The spring at the bottom of the lever has virtually fallen off as the boot had disintegrated. The question is what does this spring do as the gear change seems fine to me and should I try and fix it.. Mark

Pocolow.......The spring lever pushes the gear-stick back towards neutral from first/reverse. By replacing selector guides the whole gear-shift should tighten up & feel much more positive, less waving about.
Will work fine with-out boots but I like things done right & the boots will keep the grit out.

Covkid........A damn fine idea & as more & more things become obsolete a source like that would be very useful.

Aye, and just imagine, with washing machine inlet pipe you get a choice of 'funky red' or 'so cool blue'. Yes a substitute parts section is probably needed now as VW are dropping some lines completely. Hard to believe - I can remember seeing these vehicles when they first came out. How time flies eh? Yep, maybe substitute parts and back-steet refurbishers. I do know a top-notch engineer in Coventry and another in Clacton that can machine almost anything from scratch. Those guys are like gold dust. One of them made me a top steering bearing once - did a fab job of it too and the Clacton guy is SERIOUSLY good at refurbing dizzies and carbs.

Ah ha, you only asked for part numbers, have you tried any of the United States sites for stock ?

Now when I was an apprentice (Many moons ago I might add) we would have to make parts like that from the solid!

Not seen them in the flesh but would it not be possible to pack them underneath using a longer bolts/screws/or whatever is lurking beneath the crud in the holes, to raise them so that the unworn portions are in contact.

I got some ally blocks(guides) from Priory VW in Hull, If I get time I will call them tommorrow if not then after w'end.
personally there is not much wrong with yours, if you have probs with gears have a look at the bushesnetc at the g'box end.

You couldnt do me a favour could you? I have a broken stick to repair and mod tommorrow and wonder if you could give me a measurement,, from the centreline of the bolt hole that connects the stick to the main shift lever.- to the white plastic rim on the base of the mounting, As I figure the one I have is too short as the guides on the bottom of the stick pass over the alluminium guides ! like stirring tea.

For the record, you can actually drive around without those blocks - Chickenkoop is tonight. They're not as crucial a part as you'd think - more a guide but they won;t stop you getting into gear even if removed. New ones would make changes more positive but it won't improve play in any way by replacing them.

Oh and as for the rubber boot, it just keeps the grit out. You could cut a length of inner tube, seal one end then fasten the other to the boot recess with a cable tie! Anything similar would do its just a stiff sock basically.
