Coolant temp?

Hi
Does anyone know what the temp of the coolant should be? Iv just measured mine inside the header and it was 90 degrees C, after a 25 minute run.
The reason I ask is because my temp gauge is reading at about 3/4 prob just over! I also found that the "dalek" cap on top of the header is not doing its job, dont know if this would cause over heating issues? Have a replacement on order.
Cheers

I'm curious to know how you measured the temp inside the header tank when it was that hot, wasn't the water under pressure?
What engine? Stick a new thermostat in there, but be sure to get it from a reliable source (i.e. vw or Brickwerks) 'cos other cheaper ones have been known to be cr@p.

I took the cap off as there was air in the top of the header, with the use of a big rag to stop my hand from melting! Obviously the air escaped pretty sharpish and it did over flow a bit, I then stuck in my thermometer from my pressure testing kit. I have a 1.7 diesel by the way
Cheers

Hi and welcome to here, where you will find all you need to know ( and lots you don't need to know too

).
It is not unusual to have a Temp Gauge that reads over 1/2 way on these vans, due to variations in the temp sender, voltage regulator etc.
However the tank with the "Dalek" pressure cap should be brim full all the time.
You say
I also found that the "dalek" cap on top of the header is not doing its job
In what way is it not doing it's job ?
Does the van use any water ?
Also note re any water problems on these vans, that the bleeding of air out of the system is very important due to the layout. It is covered fully in our "wiki" info section (see top left of this screen).
