Stalling under breaking / idle

Hi
I've got an problem that I'm hoping to fix without a visit to the Garage.
Our 2.1 Ltr Watercooled Transporter stalls under breaking at speeds under about 10 mph or idling.
I noticed the alternator cable is frayed, but I'm guessing it'd be a timing issue?
Any ideas what could cause this?
Cheers, Liam

Dear Liam,
I doub't you will find anyone who is able to diagnose your problem via the net ,at best it could be a whole host of problems then again it could be summat and nowt...
Heres my suggestions.
Try having a look at the basic items if they haven't been checked for some time, eg: air filter is it clean ? will the engine run better with out it ?
Or try removing the spark plugs to check their condition and plug gap, if they are worn out on their tips,,,,replace them .
If you are confident enough try replacing the fuel filter, you never know it may not have been changed for some time and could be partially restricted.
Regards
Fritz,,,,

How are your brakes? Just asking as it could be your brake vaccuum servo unit playing up and letting air through into the vaccuum pipe to the inlet manifold on your engine. This would give a weak mixture and stall the engine.

Interesting indeed. And bang on the money.
