2.1 MV 1989 alternator problems!

Well i knew it was too good to be true. After 2200 kilometres of trouble free motoring around France the Van broke down today. For the last few months the Van battery light has been coming on when the revs reach around 3750. Despite changing the belts, the problem has still persisted. I asked at Just Kampers before we came away and the guy there said it was fine. I checked it was charging before we came away with the multimeter and it appeared to be fine.

The tension on the belt was fine, but recently the light has been coming on slightly lower down the rev range. Today however on leaving Monaco the battery light came on perminantely and eventually the van conked out when i slowed down at a petrol station. The batteries were both completely dead obviously where they had not been charging. We bump started it again, but then it conked out again when we slowed for a toll booth. Anyway we gave it one more try and the light actually dissapeared and the battery charged up again! So we managed to make it to the Ardeche where we intend to stay for a week, but i fear the problem will re-occur on our travels back up to catch the Ferry. I was just wondering if anyone new what might have caused this? I have some friends flying out and i was going to get them to bring an alternator with them, but when it started working again i wasn't sure whether this was the source of the problem?

If anyone has any suggestions of what to check or what might be wrong i would really appreciate it! :D

Dear Vdub,,,,,,,,,,,,,Nothing to panic about it sounds like the regulator/brush pack has given up the ghost on your alternator.
The thing is they are quite simple to fit, provided you have a basic tool kit.

The part is as follows and if in any doubt e-mail them to make sure it is the right part and will fit your alternator, and the best bit is they do international delivery........

PS, all you need to do in between trips to the local town and the pool is get your batteries charged up while you are waiting for it to arrive.
