changing headlight bulb??

hi - been looking at how to change a bulb on square/rectangular headlights (says H4 on lens). But I can't see how to get at the bulb - in my car I get to it from behind (under the bonnet), this doesn't appear to be an option.

I started unscrewing the lens, but decided screw seemed very long to really have to come out just to change bulb. Do I really have to remove the whole headlamp or am I missing something very obvious? Does the lens filp out, it does have a groove in the corner, but don't want to break it!!

thanks - (sorry - seems almost too basic to put in the tech q & a section :oops: )

Hi vanda,

nothing to simple for the techical section!!

I expect the lamp does have to come out - it does for the round ones!

The square ones have small mounting screws where the metal headlamp surround screws into the metal of the van....if you get these, the lamps should come out in there metal frames. The bulbs I think come out from the back.
Useful to have an extra pair of hands to catch the lamp once the last screw is coming undone!

Good luck - and glad you are still working on the van

Hi Em - thanks for that. Just preparing ready to set off for France tomorrow.

was just watching a video on Just Kampers http://www.justkampers.com/videos/view/changing_a_bulb" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

He's changing headlamp on a Beetle - but I imagine it must be pretty similar - and look show you describe! Had forgotten they have videos of some pretty useful (for me!) stuff.

Hope you and yours all well - speak soon.
