buy a camper and make her your own

so here's how the old girl looked a few months ago, not long after i bought her (soz cant find any decent ones of her atm). she's a 1980 Devon 2l Aircooled and she's great :D :

however, i immediately realised that i had to make her personal. a plan was needed to make her feel like my own. dont get me wrong, she was completely useable from day 1, but the interior was 'very' grubby and the engine is 'very' tired :( i set about installing a lesiure battery and associated circuits. i split the charging by using a big diode and have a 6 MCB switch panel for the sundry circuits.

having no sounds was an issue, so i installed a thumping sound system, for the not so quiet weekends away  this raised a few issues with the nearly 30 year old chipboard. i now realised the interior would need a complete revamp, so thats gonna happen over this winter *fingers crossed*, as i still want to use her for her purpose in life...... going away and having fun :)

my family didnt like the colour, and tbh as the brown wasnt the standard VW brown of the Devon, nor did i  now it gets interesting, the paint job ! my friend (the one with the splitty  ) is a tattoo artist. i trust his artistic flair implicitly. i chose the colours i wanted (all original VW colours) and he designed the paint job for me. this first draft on paper was not to my liking, the second however was spot on :D

now, this is not going to be to everyones liking, and i completely understand that (life would be very boring if that was the case), so please be gentle with your comments  oh yes, and then came the wheels, just to set it off. got them from Midland Wheels which was a real mission for me, but they were excellent and 'very' helpful to a noob camper like myself :D thats where the money ran out, and mrs koopsi put her foot firmly down :run

hopefully the interior will be done this winter and engine next, although i may have to change that around as 55mph flatout is causing me some concern :? whatever happens, i'll keep u all updated (thats if anyone is interested  )

so, here's how she looks now - those of a nervous disposition, look away now.......

Wow! They'll be no excuses for not waving at you: you'll be seen a mile off!

I think it looks grand. The thing I love about VWs and the scene (and I hope you will find this) is that there are no rules and you can do what you like with your van.

Good luck to you with the rest of your revamp and I look forward to maybe seeing that paint job in the flesh one day!

Tom

many thanks for all your lovely comments, never can quite tell how the van is gonna go down as i generally get mixed views on it (and yes, i can hear the purists spitting their coffee out already  )

i think the offset is exactly (if not 'very' close to) the original :? im looking for the paperwork to confirm, but tbh i put my trust into the fella as i have no experience of buying wheels, he just looked it up on his computer and hey presto :) the wheels and tyres dont seem to be rubbing on anything and there appears to be plenty of space, but now you have me wondering..... arghhhh, the worries of owning such a beast

love the paint job. if those wheels are empi 5,s the offset is 12  now that is wrong for t25 (see wiki) i had a set on my van and loved the look of them but changed them after realising they were not within the specs to keep my van happy. if you have just purchased them you may be able to swap them for a more suitable set of wheels. good luck and a great looking van. :ok

That looks great. Given me inspiration to brighten mine up a bit too !!!
You need a 2.4 air cooled engine with some dellorto's that'll sort that problem for you
