Testing an Eberspacher

I've got an Eberspacher in the loft that I bought a few years ago and never fitted. I'd like to check if it is working so that I can sell it - my new van has one already.

A few Qs:

Do I need to test it with fuel (diesel) ?
IF not, what should happen if I wire up the eber to a battery (with enough volts - I know that bit) and turn the on knob?
I know the pump probably works - already wired that up to the battery and I get a click each time I connect it :D
