What I need to know is what the name is for that chipboard that has a white facing and has a sort of wood effect pattern on it. The pattern's sort of "engraved" into the surface and looks a sort of browny/ grey colour.

conti is a brand name most associated with laminate boards, you need to know what colour/ wood type if you are trying to match something existing, if it's something new then just choose what you like. shop fitting firms usualy have pretty good knowledge of whats what, and a good list of suppliers. i just laid my hands on 2 8'x4' sheets of oak laminated mdf(both sides) i'm having a full oak interior in rosie!!!!!!! i know a few suppliers around the grantham area if it's any help

I bought some Conti for the work surface kitchen area of the van, I hate working with it and still haven't sussed how to cut it without the lam chipping. Tried scoring the cut line, tried jigsaw blades with different teeth and sets and it still chips........whats the technique?....

cut it from the underside with a sharp new blade, buy lots and change it often. powersaw's cut on the up stroke to pull the tool towards the wood making it more stable to use, hand saw's cut on the push, so cut from the seen side. or use a sacrificial piece on top of the wood, either way should stop the breakout

Just asked son who worked with it during his apprenticeship. They used a two bladed machine. One cut a groove underneath, and the other did the actual cutting from the top. Obviously we have to try something else. My technique is to use a metal cutting blade and cut slowly!
I am looking for more of what I have to do the "wardrobe area". If I have to use plain white it won't look too bad, but I'd prefer to match it all. The stuff I've used so far was from a dismantled fitted wardrobe!

or know what size you want, and take it to a local joinery shop, they should have a rise and fall saw with a scoring blade, they sholdn't charge you more than a couple of quid

That's one of the differences between such as woodmonkey and me. I "guess and get by". He is obviously a professional! I'd always go by the professionals opinion. And he knows the correct name for the tools and machinery! However .... I bet I can bodge better than woodmonkey.

Hey, I think I can call myself a professional bodger now then!!!

sounds like the finish your after is called limed oak

and the best way to finish veneered or laminated board if you arn't able to have the use of a rise and fall saw is to cut close to the cut line and use a router with a guide to trim the cut edge.
this is of course subject to having a router which can be hired from most tool hire shops.

Are you asking for the name of the type of wood pattern - eg oak, mahogany etc.

If so I think you mean "limed oak"

But looking at the other responses, I am not sure that was what you are asking for?!?!?
