Hi there - I recently bought a 1982 Devon Moonraker which has a gas cooker and 2 way Dometic/Electrolux fridge.

The previous owner left a gas heater in the van which he said had the correct regulator, but no gas bottle on it so I assume I just need to get a bottle of gas - problem is no idea which one.

The regulator attached to the heater is blue and marked 28 mb Butane 500g/h . It appears to have a screw thread where it attaches to the gas bottle- can I just fit this regulator to the gas line to the fridge and cooker.

If so what type of gas bottle will I need?

Be really grateful for an answer as promised to take the wife camping this weekend an would be nice to use the fridge and cooker.!

Difficult to say with absolute certainty but sounds like Calor Gas. I would drive down to your local stockist (Calor Gas) and see what they say.
Don't be suprised at a hefty fee for the first bottle (exchange after that)

Hi Morzov. Where are you based, if it is camping Gaz, I can let you have a bottle, then you can exchange it for a full one. this is surplus and kicking round my shed.

907 is the gaz bottle

gas heaters in the van are not a great idea (CO poisoning) unless you have them well ventilated.

propex heaters use a very safe method of heating.

the fridge and hob will run off this 907

Thanks Kev - yes had a look at one and they are about £40 deposit! Think I'll only use the valve off the heater!

Check your gas heater as it may be catalytic type in which case its well worth keeping and using as they produce negligible CO but, for peace of mind, a CO alarm is a must in a camper that has gas appliances.

If you need a bottle just visit your local tip. They often have a selection including even the odd full one. You don't need to pay the deposit then. If you have the space get the slightly bigger propane bottle and a propane regulator (about £7 from where ever stocks the bottles). The propane will work in the winter butane won't. Make sure you replace the flexible hose as they only have a few years life in them. The expire date should be printed on the hose. Worth getting new clips as well if they are rusty. Better safe than sorry.

I got a CO alarm from Wilkinsons for about £20. I was quite surprised at how sensitive they are. If you even cook a meal with the doors and windows closed the alarm starts flashing faster and faster. If you ignore it, it goes off with a noise that would wake the dead.
It is definately a lesson. I now cook with the top ventilator open and the front windows opened slightly.
It could be a fatal mistake to go to bed with a burner or heater on.

Absolutley agree about getting a CO2 alarm. We have 2...one the basic 'ring gets darker' type and then a full on battery powered alarm jobby. Can't be too careful sleeping around gas.

Nitpicking I know, but CO = carbon monoxide and is bad... it combines with the hemoglobin in our blood and limits oxygen from getting to our body.. very bad!! CO2 = carbon dioxide and is what we breath out... and only dangerous in inclosed places as it settles and displaces oxygen in the air we are breathing, like inside van, in tunnels, basements, etc.

I wonder how much oxygen 2 folks sleeping in a Camper with the windows shut use ?

I wonder how much exchange of air from inside to outside can take place in our campers, with the windows shut and bearing in mind that CO2 is heavier than air when considering where ventilation gaps etc are positioned.

I have never heard of anyone waking up dead for sleeping with windows/vents closed, so assume it's a none-issue.
