hey guys, wonder if anyone can help me? im looking at putting a turbo on my 1.9dg and have found a full kit (pipe work, turbo and all fittings) on ebay for the t25 for reasonable money and wondered if anyone has either done this or can offer any helpfull advice on the process?? and no i dont want to put a scooby in it!!!! lol!!

Who makes the kit and where is the documentation for it?

Engineering like that is not picking a turbo at random, and bolting some pipework up.. it can be, but if so good luck!

If it's from a reputable company , it will be engineered carefully, tested throughly and there will be lots of safeguards built in.

The wastegating will be well thought through and implemented, there will be (should be) changes to the ignition timing (mapping) - how does this setup achieve that? The turbo sizing and compressor and exhaust A:Rs will also have been chosen carefully - in short it will have been engineered by a trubo specialist.

i suggest that this is a fairly comprehensive kit!!

and i wasn't after comments on this particular turbo kit set up, just genral experience and do's and dont's from anyone who had turbo'd a vw wbx engine, as it doesn't seem to be a common thing to do.

Im quite new to the waterboxer scene as ive been more into Aircooled for the past 20 years or so, where turboing seems to be becoming the norm now so was wondering why it hadn't been the same with the wbx set up?

Is that a reasonable question?

The T3 means the size of the Turbo, not as in a T3 Van. (the MG metro used a T3,as well as a Lotus Esprit)

That will kill the WBX engine in no time at all.

just stick a 2.1 on and be happy

A scooby engine is the only safe way to go with a bolt on hairdryer.

Kinda reasonable

The WBX engine is well capable of spontaneous self destruct in it's standard form, so I guess the reason there is no info on fitting a turbo to one is because no-one has ever been mad enough to try it

Seriously though, a WBX would need some major re-engineering to stand the extra power of a turbo, let alone the 25PSi 450BHP job you found.

For a bit extra you can get Scooby power, that is the way to go if you want a powerful engine in your T25 (imho).

Tell us a bit about air-cooled's with turbo's, I did not know this was done.
What power do they commonly get and how do the motors stand up ?

OK GUPPY, sorry, fair question now

That looks like:

a) A helluva lot of kit for the price

b) On the surface well specified and made stuff

c) Not a specific engineered solution for vanagons/T25 (even the engine type isn't mentioned AFAICS)

d) A generic set of kit, which has been no doubt advertised for countless types of vehicles, that is, Vanagon has just been thrown into the title to attract seraches on vanagon, little more

e) Designed to 'possibly' produce 'acceptable' reslts on variety of engines (i.e. the cut of the turbos jib would be a compromise, but maybe offers good adpatability to gas flows, a wide range of boost settings etc)

f) The intercooler pipework would need additional pipe and work for an upfront installation and would be out of the question for an air-to-air intercooler anyway, so would have to be at the back (somewhere v.difficult to position ina T25)

g) the manifold as they say, requires adaption and welding as would the exhaust to accomodate the wastegate flow (too loud to leave it open)

h) kit mainnly intended for fast/track vehicles

i) Fully installed and well setup and set to 5~7 psi, you should get some decent performance from it.

j)You might also get a shedload of problems, in running, detonation, economy, lag (though might be OK, that's where the specific engineering solution for a specific engine scores, as well as safety)

k) It is normal to run a lower compression ratio on turbo engines, hence the low boosts you could prob. get away with, but one incidenece of HSD (High Speed Detonation)and probably bye bye engine

I suppose I could go on, but unfortunately not a turbo installation engineer, nor have a crystal ball...

What you would need I suggest is to find someone else (in US?) who has applied this kit to vanagon 1.9 and done a lot of the troubleshooting that it would no doubt require. In short, allow a lot of time, more money, and have a spare (ideally brand new) engine sitting on blocks just in case.

PS. They didn't get 1.9 in US petrol vanagons IIRC, just 2.1 MVs (more suitable than 2.1 DJ due to lower compression)

so basically without a rebuild on the engine itsd not really worth it?
i guess the same goes for the type 1/2 engine you need 'worked' heads turbo grind cam etc on them to makle it a viable 'long term' option just wondered why it was so increasingly done in the Aircooled vans / bugs and not the t25s, and im thinking its just the money aspect i guess?
i really wanted to stay vw with my engine though and not go japanese as i am a bit of a dub head at heart and always will be!
i guess anothe option would be audi 5cyl and s/a bell housing? but again lots of dollar and a nightmare to install i guess??!!

the other option i was looking at was just a pep up on what ive got twin 40 dells, nice stainless from turbo thomas, but im really struggling to find manifolds/ linkage for the carbs any ideas would welcome

Im a massive dub fan all my cars and vans etc are all vw got a fair few of them and the engine in my van is a scooby 2.2 lump best thing i ever did !!!

theres loads of type 1s and 2s with turbos on now check out my local vw club sas rennwagens (pop it in to google)
a few of the lads are running turbos there 200-300 brake is not unheard of on the lumps some of them are running!!
also check out the turbo install on the bus they made in camper van crisis which is repeated seemingly weekly on the satalite channels!
the only t25 turbo ive seen done on the original engine was the team akciddento t25 (on you tube) saw that run at santa pod a few years back and it was rapido!
just thought it would be a bit tasty to run one on mine too! but looks like its twin carbs and a stainless!

Air cooled turbo's not a problem, waterboxers con rods are pi$$ poor and the head stud issue. I had a 400bhp Aircooled but there was not a standard part in the engine.

well andy that was basically my first question!! wanted to know what i needed to put into the engine/trouble shooting etc, if some one had done it,
didnt want 400 bhp, as i know this would involve major work (im a bit new to turbos but have seen many an engine built!) just wanted a bit more poke as my bus is gonna be my daily again very soon
so i rekon its back to the 40s and s/s exhaust
you know where i can get a good cam for my engine or manifolds/ linkage forthe carbs?

Additionally, aircooleds usually have lower compression ratio pistons available and a much, much longer history of development and performance parts...waterboxers have never really been exploited for track or competition, although Schick produced a few road-going turboed 2.1s

Shick Syncro 16 Turbo (this one in the UK). Vehicle has many other mods too, including suspension geometry changes. It changed hands a couple of years ago now... in London somewhere.

If you like all original VW, maybe just reflect that given some creative thinking by VW management, admission of an engine bay worse than a hornmets nest and a desire to continue production of their rear-engined buses beyond 1992, the EJ 2.2 and 2.5 would in fact, likely be in the back of later models with a VW badge, built under license... it's that good a match!
