before you replace pump when did it last have a filter change, a filter that is partiallly blocked will put more strain on the pump which will make more noise.

Did it defo have fuel filter, there is no replacement interval from vw, in other words they expected it to last the life of the vehicle.

My Current Pump is almost silent
My old 2.1 DJs fuel pump was quite noisy. I cant say I could hear it above the engine but never groveled underneath while running. It never let me down.

Silver and shiny? I thought they were either blue or yellow inside? Took the one off Dad's van last week, it was full of crud!
