cylinder head gaskets

Is it possible/ recommended to fit heads without gaskets to 1600 air-cooled engines. I was told not to fit them just grind barrels into head and leave gaskets out.

Can't say I've ever fitted gaskets - just one more thing to leak if you think about it.
