my van is a faliure :(

had my van moted today and it failed miserably,
14 items,

some silly little bits and bushes, no problem.....

some welding, no problem BUT....talk about over pickey, i am a welder by trade but what he is failing it on is stupid, he made it clear he hates old vehicles :(

brakes, fair enough

my concern is.............

emmisions, he has not failed it on them as such, but said the machine wouldnt/couldnt test them because the idle revs were to high, or going up and down, the thing is its a 2.0 aur cooled and every beetle spletty/bay i have ever heard sounds like it runs the same, i dont know what to do with it (its an auto if its relevant)

i was under the impression that cars this old (82) didnt need an emmisions test? or is that just for older deisels? as i know my old mk1 jetta D didnt need one?

he sounds like a right a***.
tek it somewhere else m8.
on vehicles this age they are allowed to raise the revs for the emmissions test but he obviously couldn't be bothered.

Agree - go somewhere else. I had a garage like that and the guy tore a beetle I had to bits with a list as long as your arm including failing the 'rear anti-roll bar' which as any bug owner knows is a towing aid, not a roll bar. I went next door and he only failed it on one thing.

cheers guys, if i have to i will take it elsewhere, but to be honest he was laughing saying there is no way i will be able to get the work done and get it back there within 10 days for the retest, so that has just made me detirmined to get it sorted so he has to pass it, but if all else fails i will indeed go elsewhere.

been listning to it today, when first started it wont tick over, you have to keep the revs up, also it will stall when you put it in drive or reverse (auto) untill it has warmed up, once warm it seems ok, but it does rev very high when you take it out of gear into N or P and then the revs do seem a little erratic, not sure where to start other than the carbs, but dont really know what it could be, any ideas? mixture prehaps? not sure what else could cause this behaviour

cheers
jon

you might have a little air leak that's raising the revs.

take the hit and forget this nob head.

get some work done on the engine and find a motter with some lean toward older cars

ps.
fill in your location mate, so we can see where you are and, folks will be able to recommend one in your area

profile, updated, sorted.......

Steve, i cant see them getting away with it over here, plus your bonniville would be ok wouldnt it if its just commercial vehicles, presumably they can still be used but just for private use?

Though to be fair, they're fairly generous emission levels.

well, i have finished all the welding on it today, sorted all the lights out, horn aquired to be fitted tommorow, windscreen washers sorted, had a fiddle with the engine tonite, it seems the auto choke part of the carb where the throttle linkage bolts to was loose on both carbs, so i have tigtened them and adjusted the timing slightly, but still seems to rev up and down on idle, i have tighted the 4 clips on the airbox-carb air tube thingys :?
is there supposed to be some kind of a clip to seal the airbox tubes to the top of the carbs? it doesnt look like there is enough room for jubilee clips so not sure???

also when the engine is off and the van is stone cold, overnight ect should the choke butterflies in the carbs be open or closed??

cheers

Closed!

Restricts the airflow into the carbs and makes the mixture richer.

If you have an idle stabalisation unit fitted (on left of engine bay looking from rear) with two round connectors running into it, disconnect the two connectors from the unit and plug them together. Sometimes these units play up a bit and can cause unprdictable results with idle and engine running.

Do these MOT ers make it up as they go along ? Took my old 94 Cavalier for its MOT and it went through OK but he did not do emmisions as he said it was too old ? He said the same thing when he did my T3 1988. If you take it for MOT and you then take it somewhere else because of the computerised system dont they know what it previously failed on ? Good luck mate.

You're also in the fortunate position of being near to Gasure, Steve is a top bloke and should be able to help you, schedule allowing of course.

Ian.
