Fitting New Wheel Bearings

Hello!
Just had an M.O.T and returned with an advisory for the rear near-side wheel bearings. Was curious how much of a job this is to do one's self? The wheel bearings are about £35 but the garage wanted about £85 for labor so thought I'd see if I can save myself a few pounds.

Yes you can do it yourself - if that gives you any confidence. Besides, once youi start, you HAVE to finish.

I may have done it the wrong way but as far as I can remember, I needed to also remove driveshaft from the other side so I could knock stub axle through. Haynes will explain it ok. Think you also need to drift old bearings out - not too hard. Pretty sure you don't need to touch brakes as that assembly can be just be moved out the way if you're careful.

I did the RNS bearing on my 16" Syncro recently and followed Haynes' instructions (with Bentleys for more specific Syncro info).
You need to undo the 6 CV bolts and crack the hub nut off before you jack up and remove the wheel. I disassembled the whole brake system as it was easier and got a decent clean and copperslipping on reassembly. My local garage let me use their press and petrol wash so it was much easier. Having said that, I didn't find any of it particularly tight so careful thumping would probably work ok. They also lent me a 3/4" breaker bar and monster torque wrench for the hub nut.

Thank you very much for the inspiring replies - I shall give it a go using Mr. Haynes.

i wouldnt bother with the socket approach and breaker bar & scaffold pole & 3 men to jump on it fiasco. Buy a 46mm slogging spanner of egay, remove cotter pin,put sloggin spanner on nut & whack it hard........nut will fly off
