what is it?

Hi all,
This is hanging underneath my brothers Autohomes 1.9 watercooled. 1988-89, and he does not know what it is. I have looked in the haynes manual but could not see it.
Can anybody tell me. A, what it is. B what it does. C where it should be. D whhere can I get one from.

it was the heat exchanger that feed warm air from the zorst up to the air intake, chop it off and thow away, its not needed , most of us dont have them anymore.

I know that Mocki said that no one uses it anymore, but being a bit of a perfectionist, seeing that it was loose, I did a Blue Peter job on Joanna using some Turkey Tin Foil and some aluminium exhaust tape.

Seems to have done the trick, and was not failed on Joannas MOT either this month :D

If no one uses these anymore, then how do people with water cooled heat the cabins? Curious thats all.

*ahem* water coolers have water fed heaters, which work!

that bit hanging off is only to divert warmish air up to the air intake for the carb, but it never gets cold enough to worry about it in this climate......

ah right...thanks Mocki. Like I said, I didnt know the relevance, and as I come from the school of thought that says "if you dont know...ask"
